I was installing the HP Insight Manager plugin on a couple of ESX 4.1u1 boxes today and saw some frightening behavior. The install script automatically puts your ESX host into maintenance mode, installs, takes your host out of maintenance mode and then tells you that a reboot is necessary to complete the install… If a reboot is necessary, why would it take you out of maintenance mode? This got me thinking about vCloud Director.
From the vCloud Director documentation:
vCenter clusters used with Cloud Director must be configured to use automated DRS.
If Auto DRS was turned on, as soon as that host comes out of maintenance mode, VMs would start vMotioning on to the host. You’d have to put it back in maintenance mode so all the VMs would vMotion back off the host. HP fail. I guess VMware is killing ESX anyway, so this problem won’t be around for much longer.
